Lyophilization is started after the trays in which the material is placed are placed on the shelves in a stainless steel cabinet or room inside a cylindirical main body and the cabinet door is tightly closed.
There is a vacuum pump outside the cabinet. The condenser can be located inside or outside. Some lyophilizers have separate caps at both ends for loading and unloading. One side of them opens to the unloading section and the other side to the loading section.
The loading of the trays is done by means of carrier trolleys. Channeled trays are used to prevent the bottles from moving.
The stoppers of these bottles are not fully closed to allow the escape of water vapor. At the end of the process, the mechanism inside the device turns it off.
